My Life in the Cartel tells the tale of Kenny Dog Leach and in the song he goes back to see his wife Justine Teeny Rey. Kenny had a son with Jane but she booted him out. Their son is Daryl Jacob and because Kenny is Jewish he wanted Jacob but Jane wanted Daryl. The initials make DJ which coincidentally is Daryl Jacob’s job. The song And So it Begins is about him.

Bio

The New No started in 2013
Ben and Rodney started writing songs about different types of villains in songs that comment about what it is like to be up close and personal with this crowd. Rodney was working as a stand up comedian and managing a band in Hackney and some moments were epic and others were pretty scary. These made their way onto paper. By working on songs from 2013 onwards, Ben and Rodney built a series of cracking tunes with hugely entertaining stories. However it wasn’t until their fascination for London villains spawned the creation of a fictitious family called The Hampton Family that The New No really came into existence. The Hampton family are a strange bunch of characters who are quite shady. Some of the characters are quite frightening, some are nice on the outside but really dangerous and one is a woman who is really seedy. All the stories involving these characters are the substance of a series of songs.

My Life in the Cartel - The New No

Lyrics

Nice shave brushed up pretty neat, you’d never know. Used to be a queens guard 22 up 22 down, four hours on, four hours off, always drunk. Speeding down the industrial roads, empty but careful, follow the signs, don’t pay attention to them other cars.
Take a trip to the coast.

Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises. Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises

Excited and aware. How come they’re so hot on punctuality, I thought it was for a joke, “if you’re late I’ll kill you” give it a chance from the skydive to the cocktail bar, cut to the chase, waiting for the ageing babe working for the other side to flash you a smile. Towards the city smoke, bright lights to guide me there, the clock is ticking tut tut tut for what I’m about to do.

Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises. Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises

An army can take a city without shedding blood, that’s a beautiful idea yeah yeah yeah but that ain’t the case now. Revenge will be taken for what them have done. Now the time has come, bright lights dot dot dot. Smoking, sucking morning smoke on a ravaged throat.
No sudden movement but slow slow yeah feeling kind of nervous in the waking hours

Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises. Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises
Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises. Concrete sinks, hot air rises, seems like life ain’t full of surprises

I went down the bakers got meself a cake, a little compensation for my day, a small reward. See I never do much really, I don’t like being intimidated by some people but occasionally it can happen. I don’t live in a world similar to everyone. Look out your window my dear, I’ll be back later.

L’histoire de “Ma vie au cartel” de The New No My Life in The Cartel parle de Kenny Dogleach qui n’aime pas qu’on lui manque de respect.

The New No

I suppose if you look into our way of working… when we create a track it is very much in sync with question “is it good enough to continue with this idea“. Creativity is something we aren’t short of but there is a certain way of managing the huge amounts of ideas. Peter Buck from REM said “if I have an idea, I’ll play it to the band and if they don’t go “hell yeah” then I drop it”. The idea for some of our songs begins with some amusing stories. When we recorded Lewisham Dance School, I was trying out a cheeky voice pretending to to be a twenty something woman from Lewisham who likes men. That idea was kept because it has a bit of reality. One idea we exploited after meeting a WWII tank commander at a village dinner was a full-on Commander gung ho lingo with swearing and everything. All great fun. However if it isn’t doing it for Ben… it gets the Apple Z (cancel) treatment. Rodney
